Liver Function Test (LFT)

A Liver Function Test (LFT) is a blood test that assesses the health of the liver by measuring various enzymes, proteins, and other substances produced by the liver. Common parameters measured include alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), bilirubin, and albumin. Elevated levels of ALT and AST often indicate liver damage or inflammation, while high bilirubin levels can suggest bile duct problems or liver disease. Low albumin may point to liver dysfunction, affecting protein synthesis. LFTs are crucial for diagnosing liver conditions like hepatitis, fatty liver, cirrhosis, and for monitoring the effects of medications or alcohol on liver health.
